Academic Emin Riza, a contributor to the study of Albanian cultural heritage, passes away

Academician Emin Riza, one of the most renowned Albanian researchers in the field of cultural heritage and traditional architecture, has passed away at the age of 89.
Born on July 3, 1937 in Shkodra, Emin Riza dedicated his entire life to the study, documentation and protection of the values of Albanian material heritage. For decades he served as a researcher, lecturer and specialist at the Institute of Cultural Monuments, making an important contribution to the recognition and preservation of monuments and traditional buildings.
Among his most important works are the study "The City-Museum of Gjirokastra" (1980), one of the fundamental works on the construction heritage of this historic city, as well as the monograph "Albanian House with a Corner" (2018), published by the Academy of Sciences, which deals with the typologies of Albanian folk houses and their architectural values.
Academician Riza was the author of 16 monographs, five of which in collaboration with other researchers, as well as 134 scientific articles published in specialized journals, where he addressed topics on folk architecture, building structures and historical Albanian cities.
He has also held the role of editor-in-chief of the scientific journals "Studia Albanica" and "Monuments", contributing to the promotion of scientific research on cultural heritage.
One of Emin Riza's most important contributions was his engagement in drafting the legal framework for cultural heritage, as well as leading the working group for preparing the dossiers of Gjirokastra and Berat for UNESCO, helping to include them in the World Heritage List.
For his extraordinary work, he was honored with the title of "Honorary Citizen" of Gjirokastra and Berat, and was also an external member of the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts.
The Albanian Academy of Sciences and the Permanent Commission on Cultural Heritage have expressed their condolences to the family, friends, academic community and all collaborators of academic Emin Riza, describing his passing as a great human and scientific loss.
