From academic to state leader/ Who is Justina Shiroka Pula, the new president of

Justina Shiroka Pula was elected president of Kosovo on October 7, following a last-minute agreement between the ruling Vetëvendosje Movement and the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo, shortly before the end of the constitutional deadline for electing the country's new president.

She was elected in the first round of voting, with 81 votes in favor, the minimum required in this round. Shiroka Pula, 72, was sworn in as president before the members of the Kosovo Assembly and said she accepts the new task “with responsibility.”

" This mandate does not belong to just one person, but to the citizens and the state ," she said in her speech to MPs.

She pledged to be the president of all citizens and to protect the Constitution, the interests of the republic and the interests of the citizens of Kosovo. Her opponent, Eliza Hoxha, received one vote, while two votes were invalid.

Shiroka Pula was nominated in the last moments of the term for the new president by Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, and her candidacy was accepted by the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Bedri Hamza. PDK proposed its own MP, Eliza Hoxha, as her counter-candidate.

After a day of deadlocks and lack of direct communication, Kurti and Hamza finally agreed on Shiroka Pula's name, and she was officially elected president 13 minutes after the constitutional deadline, perhaps creating potential legal obstacles.

Ehat Miftaraj from the Kosovo Law Institute [IKD] told Radio Free Europe that it is not important when the procedure began, but that it must be completed within the deadline set by the Constitution.

"Any appointment after October 6 is unconstitutional. The consequence that the Constitutional Court associates with the failure to elect the president by October 6 is the dissolution of the Assembly according to Article 82 of the Constitution ," said Miftaraj.

Miftaraj The Constitutional Court evaluates the constitutionality of the election of the president after the deadline if someone initiates a case in the Constitutional Court.
