“Manifesting” has become one of the most popular trends of recent years, from vision boards and affirmations to journaling and the 3-6-9 method. But can it really bring what we want into our lives?
The discussion recently returned through Dua Lipa, after her song "Training Season", released before her relationship with actor Callum Turner, was interpreted on social media as a kind of "manifestation" of the partner she wanted.
However, there is no scientific evidence that our thoughts or desires can mystically “attract” people or events. What can really influence is the way a clear goal orients attention, motivation, and behavior.
If a person clearly defines what they want, they can become more attentive to possibilities, change habits, and take concrete steps toward their goal. In this sense, manifestation can function more as a way to focus the mind than as a “message” to the universe.
Although today it is mainly associated with social media, the idea is not new. It is associated with the American New Thought movement of the 19th century and later with the concept of the "law of attraction."
These ideas were further spread through self-help literature, while in pop culture they made a strong comeback with the book and film "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne.
Today, the modern version of manifestation occurs through affirmations, visualizations, vision boards, and methods like 3-6-9, where a wish is written repeatedly throughout the day.
The most concrete part is not the idea that the universe will grant the wish, but the clarity on what it is asking for.
Setting a goal can help you understand what steps you need to take, what opportunities to notice, and what behaviors you need to change.
The same goes for relationships. Knowing what values and qualities you look for in a partner can influence the choices you make and the boundaries you set.
