Embassy alarm about Iranian attacks/ Rama government denies US: Speculation, we do not have this information
Prime Minister Edi Rama is furious with an Alert Notice from the US embassy in Tirana, according to which groups linked to Iran may also target the territory of Albania. Through a reaction from the Rama Government, this American concern and alarm has been categorically denied and even described as speculation.
The embassy urged American citizens in Albania to "exercise increased vigilance."
In a statement, the Embassy said that Iran-linked groups "may also target common places, such as tourist sites, shopping malls, hotels, clubs and restaurants."
However, the Albanian Government's Media and Information Agency told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that Albanian law enforcement agencies "do not have any concerning information regarding this speculation by the American embassy."
She added that the US Embassy "regularly issues such alerts, even when opposition groups protest, burning trash cans or throwing Molotov cocktails to appear in photos in foreign newspapers."
"So, we invite American citizens not to miss any of the wonderful opportunities that Albania offers, with its countless tourist sites, its unrivaled hospitality, and its impeccable food," the agency's response states.
The US Embassy's warning came a few weeks after hackers linked to Iran carried out cyberattacks on state institutions in Albania, and after the Albanian Parliament declared Iran a state sponsor of terrorism.
The announcement comes just weeks after hackers linked to Iran carried out cyberattacks on state institutions in Albania, and after the Albanian Parliament declared Iran a state sponsor of terrorism.
Relations between Iran and Albania have been tense and practically frozen since Albania offered members of the Iranian opposition group, MEK, safe haven over a decade ago.
Albania also supports the United States and Israel's war against Iran, which began on February 28. Iran has responded by carrying out attacks on Israel and American bases in the Middle East region.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama had said that Albania supports the American-Israeli attacks because it has directly confronted "the barbaric face of the Tehran regime, through its cyber aggressions."
Last month, the Albanian Parliament and Post Office were hit by cyberattacks.
The group Homeland Justice claimed responsibility for both attacks.
Homeland Justice, according to an analysis by American technology giant Microsoft, is linked to the Iranian Government.
In its posts on Telegram, the hacker group had said that the attacks on Albanian institutions were being carried out to condemn their decision to shelter the opposition group MEK, also known as the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran.
"When you support terrorists, you should know that you will pay the price for this, in all aspects," reads one of the group's posts on March 10.
In other posts, the group accuses Albanian politicians of listening to "American orders," and warns that this attack is "just the tip of the iceberg."
Security experts were divided on whether the MEK's presence in Albania increases the risk, or has no impact, on possible attacks from Iran, following the start of the war with the US.
Following the start of the Iran war, international security experts have warned that escalating tensions between the United States and Iran increase the risk of potential terrorist attacks or covert operations outside traditional conflict zones.
According to an analysis published by the American magazine The Atlantic, Iran has historically used various networks and methods to retaliate against adversaries, especially when faced with great political or military pressure, including attacks originating outside Iran's territory.
Meanwhile, reports from the New York Times newspaper emphasize that American intelligence agencies are monitoring the possibility that Tehran could activate allied groups in various regions to strike American interests or their allies.
