"There is a nucleus within us that does not want the party to open up", Aleksandër Biberaj: Time to revive the KOP, brought the DP to power in 2005

Aleksandër Biberaj, member of the DP National Council, stated in an interview with "Kjo Javë" that within the DP there is a group of people with political careers who do not want the party to open, because according to him, they are scared of competition.
Biberaj said that without this opening, it is difficult to rotate the government, as the DP must first rotate its own structures, including the leadership. This, according to him, would restore the trust of the electorate.
According to Biberaj, the return of the KOP is one of the steps that the DP must take to bring new figures within it, to revive hope like in 2004-2005, which brought the DP to power.
"We have the models, but we need a more tolerant and modern approach. Taking power should be a goal in itself to serve Albania, but I think it is time for those who are the leadership of the DP to rise above these personal interests. For me, the careers of those in the DP are not important, for me what is important is making rotation possible," said Biberaj.
Aleksandër Biberaj : Opening is a term that needs to be updated. There are two reasons why the opening has not happened. The DP assembly in the spring is the right moment to theoretically and practically open the DP.
Intellectuals are generally conformist by nature, and if we look at history, we are the only country that has not had dissent after the 1960s.
A certain nucleus has been created in the DP, which despite their contributions should be more loyal and more open to competition. Because what happens? We Albanians do not like competition, we are afraid. So the DP should be opened up so that individuals who want to run can run in order to have a different chairmanship, a different National Council and a different leadership in order to make rotation possible. We have colleagues there, we cooperate, we are in a trench, but I see that at certain moments they are more sectarian than they should be.
I believe that Berisha will take all his responsibilities to make it possible to open the DP as happened in 2004-2005 when the KOP, the Policy Orientation Committee, was created. The creation of that committee was one of the impetuses that Albanians created trust, hope was raised and the 2005 rotation became possible. We have the models but we need a more tolerant and modern approach. The opposition is difficult, I remember in 1997-2005. I remember that when the KOP was created, there was a lot of resistance from the DP. It was Berisha's idea with the suggestion of Besnik Mustafaj and we were a group that supported them.
But within the DP there has been a lot of resentment, rightly so, because they thought that we spent 8 years in opposition and when it comes to power, these KOP people take over.
But you have to look higher. So I believe that taking power should not be an end in itself to satisfy the egos or career ambitions of certain individuals.
Taking power should be a goal in itself to serve Albania, but I think it is time for those who are the leadership of the DP to rise above these personal interests. For me, the careers of those in the DP are not important, for me it is important to make rotation possible. After all, Rama remains today the most hated man in Albania after Enver Hoxha.
But we also have our problems. The lists of the DP in the last elections were not the best possible lists, there is a need for a deep reform of the DP. The long opposition calcifies the party. I hope the opposition is ending and the time is coming for the DP to come to power, but for this to be possible, openness is necessary.
