Endri Shabani, the leader of the Nisma Thurje, is calling for early elections in the Municipality of Tirana. Citing the law, he says that the socialist mayor, who has been behind bars for 4 months, should have been dismissed and the date for new elections should have been announced.
"Erion Veliaj must be dismissed! The Special Anti-Corruption Court has decided again today that Erion Veliaj will remain in prison. It has been more than 4 months since he took the mayor's chair with him. How long will we tolerate the capital of Albania, and over 1 million inhabitants, being governed from prison?
How long will Tirana remain without a mayor?! There is no longer any justification, neither legal nor moral, for the Tirana Municipal Council not to demand his dismissal.
"The local government law, article 62, forces us to act. Tirana is not the private property of either Veliaj or the SP. Tirana cannot be governed from prison, and citizens cannot be treated as spectators in an absurd theater ," writes Endri Shabani, head of the Nisma Thurje.
