Former Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati has been critical of the way the political system functions in Albania, emphasizing that what is concerning is the fact that the model still exists where "politicians are not afraid of the people."

According to Bushati, the EU has no problem in principle with accepting countries like Albania, especially considering that Albania is already part of NATO. He argues that the problem lies in the compatibility of the country's political model with the democratic standards prevailing in the European Union.

Bushati stated that in the case of Albania, the main challenge is guaranteeing a level playing field in politics and the willingness to accept the loss of power, emphasizing the need for a clear separation between the state administration and the ruling party.

"Citizens should know who they are voting for and politicians should be afraid of citizens," said Bushati, adding that currently the situation is reversed, as citizens are often the ones who feel afraid of politics.

"We need to deal with the political model. The EU has no problem accepting Albania or Serbia. We are members of NATO. So, the veto is not an argument that the EU itself will be interested in saying come. But our model is not compatible with the dominant concept or model in the EU. There are exceptions even within the EU. In the case of Albania, the main problem is first and foremost guaranteeing a level playing field and the ability and willingness to accept the loss of power. In societies that do not have democratic traditions, rotation comes more from the willingness of the leader to accept the loss of power than directly from the vote of the citizens. It should separate the state administration from the party. This is music to our ears in the conditions we are in.

We can make the electoral system better but we must guarantee the rules of the game. We must share our minds on whether we should do these things or not. When we share our minds, we need these elements. You must know who you are voting for and those you voted for must fear you. We have not gone to a system where the politician is afraid of the people, but we are in a situation where the people are afraid of the politician. Every month Athens was burned by the students of the Polytechnic and what was in memory of their revolts. There were cases when they figuratively dragged the politician or the statesman if they thought he had abused his office. This administrative reform does not mean anything whether it will be from 60 or so municipalities or 150. For me, this type of report must be respected because I am convinced that a local elected official knows very well whether there are fewer students in the city or more who register. ", he said.

Focusing on the trial of former KLA leaders in The Hague, he added that in addition to "folklore and songs", which are important, it is necessary to work with a clear national strategy, which according to him is lacking.

"We are facing a situation in The Hague where it seems that history will be turned upside down and there is a competition with the freedom t-shirts, there are rallies and patriotic discussions and none of them are done for our causes in relation to others. And God forbid that those people are not punished and in the end equality marks are placed between the aggressor and the victim. You have no business in this process. We need to correct this in addition to the folklore of these songs, get up and come. We go to the Council of Europe, give a speech and call the prosecutor an idiot, etc., etc. and we are more Catholic than the Pope and we have no strategy and process to turn this into a national strategy." , he added.
