Volcano erupts in Iceland, hundreds of residents and tourists evacuated!

A volcano has erupted south of Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, forcing authorities to evacuate hundreds of tourists and residents from the area.
Iceland, also known as the land of ice and fire because of its glaciers and volcanoes, has seen 11 volcanic eruptions south of Reykjavik since 2021, when dormant geological systems were reactivated after about 800 years.
Lava from the volcano broke through protective barriers near the fishing town of Grindavík, prompting an evacuation order. Grindavík residents had returned to their town after previous eruptions, although most homes have been empty for more than a year.
Emergency services also evacuated the nearby luxury spa 'Blue Laguna' hours before the explosion, after geologists had warned of the event.
According to Rikke Pedersen, head of the Nordic Volcanological Centre in Iceland, the eruption was similar in size to the one in January 2024, which spewed lava into the town of Grindavík.
