The Albanian government seems to have added doses of ambition regarding the military industry and "Made in Albania" exports. Even setting a deadline: 2030. In the speech given during the inauguration of the Innovation, Security and Defense Center , Prime Minister Edi Rama paid special attention to the revitalization of the entire military industry in Albania.
For 6 years of military exports "Made in Albania"
After saying "Yes" to Ukrainian President Zelensky about Albania's readiness to join a joint production of war munitions with his country and other countries of the Western Balkans, after a little more than a month the Albanian Prime Minister has expressed himself in more concrete terms about the issue.
"Our ambition is that within the year 2030 we will have military exports of the "Made in Albania" brand, and on the other hand, of course, that our army will begin to be equipped with military equipment of the "Made in Albania" brand - informed Rama .
Even this time he mentioned the allies again, without stopping at any specific country, but emphasizing that Albania intends to be a shareholder in this venture, to receive its profits.
"We are preparing the new platform for the development of the military industry, to start a wave of investments in the defense industry, making Albania a country that not only consumes what the taxpayers give in terms of defense, that not only makes available to The Armed Forces instruments, tools, imported weapons, but also that through the defense industry makes profits, which go to the function of defense again and through its military industry, manage to supply with local products, of course in cooperation with enterprises of big, serious problems of the allied countries, the needs of our Armed Forces" - said Rama.
New platforms, old foundations
The new military industrial development platform that the government aims to revitalize relies on old military bases and factories that the country had before the 1990s. Now the eyes have turned again to Poliçani, Gramshi and Mjekesi, the former factories erected around the 1960s, which served mainly for the production of Kalashnikov weapons, rifles, mortars, mines, grenades, mines and military ammunition.
Gramshi and Policani returned to the public's attention about two years ago, when within a short period of time, Czech and Russian citizens, presented as bloggers or tourists, were caught filming inside these bases. After the events, the Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi, stated that in both of these former military factories light weapons seized by the Albanian police during police operations are sporadically dismantled and that Albania had no active military industry.
