Elected Ombudsman, Shabani: I was surprised by the opposition's reaction,

Endrit Shabani, who was elected People's Advocate by the Assembly with 85 votes from the Socialist Party last night after a marathon session (December 11), has reacted on his social network Facebook.

His candidacy was approved with 85 votes in favor, 0 abstentions and 3 votes against. Through a Facebook post, Endrit Shabani praises the majority for the votes they gave him.

He also does not fail to mention the opposition, which initially voted for his candidacy, but which later withdrew from his candidacy.

Shabani expressed surprise at the change in the opposition's stance towards his candidacy. He also thanked the 35 opposition MPs who, with their signatures, gave him the opportunity to run for the position of Ombudsman.

"Last night, I received a vote of confidence for my candidacy as Ombudsman that was both important and personally touching, as well as surprising in terms of the dynamics of the development in the Assembly hall.

I am still surprised by the opposition MPs, who initially encouraged me kindly, gave me their signatures according to the law, and wished me success, but then decided to abandon my candidacy as if it were not theirs.

On the other hand, the majority MPs initially refused to give me even a signature, although some of them are my friends, with the argument that the Socialist Party would not get involved in this opposition business, but at the final moment they all voted for me, even by secret ballot, entrusting me with the duty of Ombudsman.

This whole dynamic was something I wouldn't have believed if they had told me beforehand, and I couldn't leave it unrecorded.

However, with regret for the incomprehensible line of their party, I would like to sincerely thank the 35 opposition MPs, who with their signatures gave me the opportunity to run for this constitutional position. I assure them that I will never give them reason to think that they made a mistake in supporting me at the beginning or that they did the right thing in not voting for me at the end.

Also, I cannot help but sincerely thank the majority MPs, despite the fact that I am aware that, more than for me, their vote was an act of political maturity to resolve the institution's protracted impasse and take a significant step towards the negotiation process, where this impasse was marked as an unfinished homework assignment.

I would like to particularly appreciate the fact that by voting for me, the majority MPs prioritized the functioning of the state as a team, and humanely overcame the fact that I, as an activist engaged in the opposition ranks, have done and said things that certainly did not sit well with them.

I express my respect for the highest political level and assure you that in carrying out this important task I will do my best to enjoy the respect of everyone. Thank you!"

We recall that the voting process took place without the presence of the opposition, which left the hall before the start of the procedure, objecting to the method of candidate selection.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, who had not been present during today's session, also appeared in the Assembly, but entered the hall shortly before the start of voting for the People's Advocate.

How the votes were divided for the 6 candidates:

Tartar Bazaj: 1 in favor, 79 abstentions, 7 against

Aranita Brahaj: 4 in favor, 76 abstentions, 7 against

Skënder Haluci: 1 in favor, 72 abstentions, 14 against

Adriana Kalaja: 0 in favor, 69 against, 17 abstentions

Beism Ndregjoni: 0 in favor, 61 abstentions, 25 against

Endri Shabani: 85 in favor, 0 abstentions, 3 against

The Democratic Party withdrew the signatures for the 6 candidates, claiming that the SP seeks to take over the People's Advocate by placing Endri Shabani at its head.

The opposition requested that the draft decision not be voted on in the Assembly, arguing that they only had signatures in support of several candidates and not a concrete proposal.

But the request was rejected by 77 votes from the Socialists in Parliament.

"30 votes in favor of removing it from the agenda, 77 votes against, 1 abstention. So with 77 votes against, the draft decision on the election of the Ombudsman remains on the agenda," said the Speaker of the Assembly, Niko Peleshi.
