Humidity record! August marks the highest level of water vapor in the atmosphere

Earth's atmosphere contained the highest amount of water vapor ever recorded during August, according to Copernicus data.
The new record is linked to high temperatures, while the extra moisture could strengthen storms and extreme rainfall. Scientists link the long-term trend to global warming and greenhouse gas emissions.
More heat, more humidity and another climate record. The Earth's atmosphere contained the highest amount of water vapor ever recorded in August, according to data from the European Copernicus Climate Change Service.
The amount of water vapor reached 27.35 kilograms per square meter, surpassing the previous record of July 2024 by 0.04 kilograms per square meter.
Although the difference seems small, scientists translate it into about 20 trillion liters of additional water in the atmosphere.
The main reason is related to higher temperatures. A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture. According to scientists, for every one degree Celsius of warming, the air can hold about 7 percent more water vapor.
El Nino, the climate phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, which has influenced high sea surface temperatures and increased evaporation, is also thought to have played a role in this record.
But more moisture in the atmosphere means even more energy for weather systems.
When water vapor condenses inside clouds, heat is released, which can contribute to the strengthening of storms and rainfall. This also increases the risk of extreme precipitation and more powerful storms in different areas of the world.
High humidity also makes it harder for the body to cope with heat waves. High temperatures at night prevent the body from cooling down and recovering.
August was among the hottest months ever recorded, according to Copernicus data, while NOAA ranked it as the hottest August in the history of its series of measurements, which began in 1850.
Scientists link the long-term trend to greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels.
