Student revolt echoes in Europe, German media: Students rise up against the political establishment

Student protests against problems in higher education have escalated into violence in Albania's capital, Tirana.
According to media reports this morning, 40 people were arrested by police during the hours of unrest. Thirteen people, including six police officers, were reportedly injured.
Several hundred people demonstrated peacefully in front of the Ministry of Education on Tuesday afternoon, as reported by the news portal "a2news.com". The rally was directed against poor study conditions, high tuition costs and lack of career prospects. The demonstrators also demanded the resignation of Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has governed the Balkan country since 2013.
Later, demonstrators threw bricks and stones. Riots followed in several places in the city center, during which shops and banks were reportedly damaged and the city hall was attacked. Police used water cannons, tear gas and batons. There were also reports of attacks on bystanders and disproportionate use of force by police. Five officers have been suspended, according to the news portal "euronews.al".
The protest is linked to a series of demonstrations in Albania known as the "Flamingo Revolution." The demonstrations were sparked by a real estate project in a nature reserve on Albania's Adriatic coast, led by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump. The controversial development has the support of Prime Minister Rama. The flamingos that live in the protected area have become a symbol of the movement.
The student and environmentalist protests are directed against the entire political establishment in Albania. Rama's Socialists and the right-wing Democrats, now in opposition, have alternated in power since the democratic transition in the former communist country more than 30 years ago. Although Albania is now in relatively advanced stages of EU accession negotiations, many of its citizens perceive the political elites as greedy, corrupt and incompetent./ Adapted in Albanian Alfapress.al
