Eminem vs Spotify: Rapper loses lawsuit over his songs
A court case started in 2019 between the rapper Eminem and the music streaming company Spotify ended this Thursday. But the music star has not been able to receive any of the money claimed for the unauthorized broadcasting of his songs.

The music company "Spotify" has won a court case against Eminem, in which it was accused of broadcasting the singer's music without his permission.

The case was made public by the rapper's manager, who claimed in 2019 that Spotify failed to license Eminem's repertoire.

They sued him for about $30 million, saying the now 51-year-old star was never paid in full for songs like "Lose Yourself" and "Without Me," which have been streamed billions of times on Spotify.

But a judge in Tennessee has ruled that Spotify will not be liable for any lost pennies, despite finding that it did not have a license to stream the songs as Eminem's side claimed.

The court also concluded that, if Spotify were found guilty of copyright infringement, any fines would have to be paid by Kobalt Music Group, which collected views on behalf of Eminem's manager.

This is after Spotify responded to the lawsuit in 2020 accusing Kobalt Music Publishing of misrepresenting that it controlled the administration of the management company Eight Mile, of which Eminem is also a part, when it was not.

The company added that Eight Mile had never questioned Spotify's permission to stream Eminem's songs, despite accepting payments from the service since its US launch in 2011.

Eight Mile called those allegations "baseless," and the case went back and forth for several years. The case illustrates how confusing the business of managing music rights has become in the era of rebroadcasting.

Eminem is one of the most followed artists in the world, with over 76 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone.

The star's music remained on Spotify throughout the five-year event. He is currently the 12th most streamed artist on the platform.
