Family reveals long-running battle behind viral footage of former Nickelodeon

A viral video that recently resurfaced online showed a familiar face in an unfamiliar place. Former Nickelodeon actor Tylor Chase, once a regular on early 2000s television, was spotted living on the streets of Southern California.
Chase is best known for his role as Martin Qwerly on Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide.

According to his father, Joseph Mendez Jr., the former child star has struggled with serious mental health issues and substance abuse for years, a struggle that has repeatedly driven him from stability and driven his life to the margins.

"He's a wonderful person when he's Tylor, " Mendez told the Daily Mail.

Mendez says his son has lived with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia for more than a decade. Those diagnoses, he explained, have been closely linked to Chase's ongoing addiction problems and his resistance to ongoing treatment. The family, he said, has spent years trying to help him, often without success.

"For more than a decade, the family has sought treatment options for Tylor, including substance use support as well as mental health care ," Mendez said.

According to Mendez, Chase's addiction worsened after he was officially diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in 2015. The diagnosis offered clarity, but not relief. The family hoped it would lead to consistent treatment and a turning point. Instead, progress came in short bursts, followed by setbacks.

Around 2021, Chase agreed to enter a rehab program in Georgia. His father described the period as cautiously hopeful. For a while, Chase seemed engaged and on a structured path. That didn’t last long.

"Later he chose to discontinue medication and resumed substance use ," Mendez said.

After leaving treatment, Chase returned to California to be closer to his mother, Paula Moisio, who lives in the Los Angeles area. Since then, his life has remained unstable, marked by periods of homelessness and frequent contact with authorities.
