Cannes 2025: Why the Festival's dress code changed at the last minute

We've come to expect stunning looks every year on the world-famous Cannes Film Festival red carpet. However, this year, there are some looks we definitely won't be seeing, as the French festival has instituted a strict new dress code that was recently published on its website. Even the most famous celebrities must adhere to it and could be banned from the red carpet if they violate it.

Any overly elaborate looks or clothing that follows the popular trend of “naked” dresses are not allowed, as organizers prioritize “etiquette” and the efficient movement of guests through the festival grounds. According to the official website of the Cannes Film Festival, the dress code for the gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, where the film’s artistic teams participate, requires formal attire – that is, a long dress or a tuxedo.

On the other hand, according to the organizers, guests are allowed to wear:

-a little black dress,
-a cocktail dress,
-a suit with dark pants or
-an elegant blouse with black pants

As for footwear, guests can wear “elegant shoes and sandals with or without heels,” but sneakers are strictly prohibited. Those wearing suits should wear a black or dark blue suit, paired with a dark bow tie or tie.
