Barcelona, ​​the victim of a major financial fraud after signing with Lewandowski

Even Barça is no stranger to fraud. In fact, the Blaugrana club suffered an important "goal" in the signing of Robert Levandovski.

As reported on Thursday in the program "Què t'hi jugues", Barcelona transferred one million euros from the commission for the approach of the Polish attacker, in the summer of 2022, to a suspected fraudster who posed as Pini Zahavi, who is the agent of the attackers.

On July 29, several directors of the club received an email from an address bearing the name of Pini Zahavi, asking them to pay one million euros, part of the corresponding commission for signing the striker.

They were asked to deposit that amount into a Bank of Cyprus account number and into an account unrelated to the representative: it was in the name of Mikael Gerardus Hermanus Demon, referred to as a lawyer.

Barça deposited that amount, but the financial institution's compliance department blocked the transfer because it was considered "high risk", as no movement had previously occurred in that account, nor could it be proven a valid document that justified the said transfer.

The person posing as Zahavi was sending e-mails in which he threatened to report Barca to UEFA and block Lewandowski's registration if the million euros were not paid.

He also wrote to the directors of the Bank of Cyprus to press for the transfer to be approved.

The financial institution did not accept the pressure and the account was closed in October 2022.

According to the program "Què t'hi jugues", Barcelona admits that it was the victim of an attempted fraud, but assures that the money was found.

Furthermore, Barça admits that in 2023 they received two more e-mails asking for 250,000 euros each.

The Catalan club brought the case to the attention of the "Mossos d'Esquadra" (Barcelona police) and, based on that incident, reinforced their security and financial transfer protocols.
