Football over politics/ Germany rules out boycotting the 2026 World Cup

German football leaders reject the hypothesis of a possible boycott of the 2016 World Cup. The president of the German League (DFL), Hans-Joachim Watzke, defined the discussion as inappropriate at this stage.

"I don't think it's the time to talk. If one day it will be, then we will discuss it, " Watzke said, "but now everything is premature."

Watzke then added that he did not perceive a real debate on this topic,   speaking more about individual positions. This assessment was also confirmed by Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, according to whom these are only isolated voices, and the line of the German Football Association (DFB) is also clear. 'We have never seen a World Cup boycotted,' he underlined.

Dreesen also recalled the 2018 World Cup in Russia, held 4 years after the annexation of Crimea, where Germany participated, and according to him, there is no reason why this should not happen in 2026.

"Sports should focus on football, geopolitics is done elsewhere, " he said. Discussions about the boycott emerged in the background after political tensions between the US and Europe, particularly over President Donald Trump's position on Greenland and immigration.

There has been no shortage of criticism in political circles, but without reaching formal demands for a boycott. Recently, the vice-president of the DFB and the president of St. Pauli called for at least a debate on the participation of the USA, Canada and Mexico in the World Cup. However, Bundesliga players and managers have so far maintained a cautious attitude.
