Italian businessman sentenced to prison for links to Albanian mafia in Ecuador

Italian authorities have sentenced businessman Colonico P. to four years in prison for manufacturing, possessing and trafficking instruments used to counterfeit currency. His arrest took place in September at a private residential complex in Samborondón, in the Guayas province of Ecuador.

According to foreign media, Colonico P. is also under investigation for suspected links to the Albanian mafia operating in Ecuador. During the raid, police found bundles of counterfeit banknotes, passports and documents, while the prosecution stated that he possessed $394,700 in counterfeit money, which was hidden in a box.

Colonico P, has denied the allegations, claiming that the banknotes were placed in the apartment a few minutes before the police arrived and that he was visiting a friend.

However, according to the prosecution, the seized conversations and videos directly link Colonico P. to the criminal activity. They show a male figure resembling him testing counterfeit coins.

Based on the evidence presented and expert testimony, the court sentenced Colonico P. to four years in prison and ordered him to make a public apology.

Ecuadorian authorities have banned the entry of 1,812 people into the country during 2025, as part of investigations against international counterfeiting and organized crime networks.
