Typhoon Dujuan brings massive flooding to Japan, authorities order evacuation of 1.9 million people

About 1.9 million residents in six prefectures in Japan have been ordered to evacuate due to Typhoon Dujuan, while authorities have increased safety measures due to the risk of flooding and heavy rain.

Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that 1,908,645 people in Ibaraki, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Shizuoka and Saitama have received evacuation orders. Authorities clarify that the evacuation is not mandatory.

Meanwhile, about 300,000 other people have been urged to leave endangered areas.

In Tokyo, emergency authorities have urged residents to avoid basements as heavy rains could cause flash flooding. The warning says water could suddenly enter underground spaces, increasing the risk of people becoming trapped.

Residents have also been asked to be careful near manhole covers, which can be displaced by water flows during floods.
