Public transport in financial crisis, operators warn of 20-30% fleet reduction

Public transport operators in the country are warning of a reduction in the bus fleet by around 20-30%, starting from September 1, 2026.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister's Office, the Municipality of Tirana and the responsible ministries, the National Association of Urban Transport and the Association of Urban and Interurban Transport say that the financial situation of operators has worsened significantly, mainly due to fuel costs and the failure to realize the requested compensations.
According to them, the lack of financial support makes it impossible to continue operating at full capacity.
The reduction in the fleet is expected to bring a decrease in bus frequency, an increase in intervals between lines, and more difficulties for citizens, while operators warn that the measure is not a voluntary choice, but a consequence of the financial situation.
Operators are requesting urgent intervention from institutions to implement compensation and continue support for fuel costs.
They emphasize that they will try to guarantee continuity of service, but operating with 100% of the fleet is no longer affordable under current conditions.
