Murder of Arlinda Zekaj in Peja, 11 police officers suspended

Kosovo Police has suspended 11 officials, including senior leaders of police structures in Peja, following the recommendation of the Kosovo Police Inspectorate. The measures come after the suspension of the Chief Prosecutor of Peja and another prosecutor, while institutions are investigating the handling of the case of Arlinda Zekaj, who was killed in Vitomirica.

According to the official announcement, the Police made the decision following the recommendation of the Kosovo Police Inspectorate (IPK), which has launched a preliminary investigation to examine the possible actions and inactions of officials during the handling of the case.

Among those suspended are the acting regional director of the Peja Police, the head of Regional Investigations, the commander and deputy commander of the Peja Police Station, as well as other leaders of police structures. The decision also includes four police investigators from this station.

The Kosovo Police has explained that the measures aim to guarantee the independent development of investigations, strengthen institutional accountability and enable the determination of individual responsibilities.

Meanwhile, the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council has also suspended the Chief Prosecutor of the Basic Prosecution Office of Peja, Lumturije Vuçetaj, as well as prosecutor Arlinda Nallbani-Gacaferri.

These decisions come within the framework of the review of institutional actions related to the case of the murder of Arlinda Zekaj.

Authorities are continuing their investigations to determine whether the responsible structures have respected legal procedures and whether there were violations or shortcomings in the handling of the case. The suspensions constitute administrative measures during the investigative process and do not imply a determination of the guilt of the officials involved.
