YouTube changes views rules, will count as soon as videos start

YouTube has announced a significant change to the way views are counted on the platform. Starting August 24, a view will be recorded as soon as a video starts playing or when a user joins a live stream.

Until now, it was widely believed that a view was counted after a user had watched at least 30 seconds of a video, although YouTube had not made the exact counting system public.

The company explained that the change aims to unify the way views are measured across the platform's different formats.

"Historically, we have used multiple view count systems in different formats," YouTube said, adding that creators are looking for a clearer way to understand the real exposure of their content.

The change is expected to bring a significant increase in the number of public views, especially for videos that capture users' attention for only a few seconds.

However, YouTube will continue to offer creators the previous metric, which will now be called “Engaged Views.” It will allow them to see how many users continued to watch the content.

The company has also clarified that the change will not affect creators' earnings or how they qualify for monetization through the YouTube Partner Program.

This change comes shortly after YouTube also announced new rules for monetization, providing higher criteria for new creators who want to benefit from advertising and subscriptions.

The changes have caused mixed reactions among creators, as public view counts may become less useful as an indicator of real audience engagement.
