According to the data published by "Global Firepower", which measures the military power index of 145 countries of the world, Albania ranks 90th for the year 2024. This index determines the result of a certain country depending on the capacity for to defend themselves or to carry out military operations. For the calculation of this indicator, factors such as: the number of military troops, finances, artillery technology, logistics capabilities, etc. are taken into consideration.

Compared to the assessment of this indicator in 2023, our country has improved, approaching a position towards the most powerful countries militarily. Specifically, a year ago, the military forces in our country were rated at 1.8466 points, ranking 91st among 145 countries, while in this year's edition, the rating in points is 1.8188 and we are ranked 90th. But how ready is our country to defend itself through modern military means?

According to the index, Albania registers its defense budget at 386 million dollars, while this budget level ranks us 113th among 145 countries in total, improving from a year ago. So, as far as expenses in the field of defense are concerned, Albania has managed to secure a favorable position in the ranking. Another important tool for the operation of the defense is also the military air vehicles.

According to the data of the index, our country has only 19 aircraft in total, while it does not register any aircraft used for training, no combat aircraft, no military special mission aircraft and no attack aircraft or helicopters. So, as far as airspace is concerned, Albania ranks 100 out of 145 countries in total. On the ground, how ready is Albania to defend itself and how many military assets does it have? The index figures show that in total we have 40 tanks and 976 armored military vehicles. We also remain in last place in terms of self-propelled artillery and rockets. So, in other words, the ground military vehicles in Albania in total consist of 61% armored vehicles and 39% tanks.

Meanwhile, in terms of the military power that operates at sea, Albania consists only of patrols in the open sea with a total of 19 patrol ships. The numbers confirm that we are last in aircraft carriers, in submarines and in mine warfare.

In a wider geographic scope, if we were to compare Albania at the regional level, we say that it enjoys the second place after Serbia, which is positioned in 56th place. Then follow Montenegro and North Macedonia in the 116th and 110th places respectively, showing a significant improvement compared to the previous year. While the countries with the weakest military power are assessed as Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, which are ranked between the last 10 and 12 countries in the world.
