Release of the director of the Albanian National Institute of Social Sciences

The Supreme Court has eased the security measure for the former director of the Albanian Anti-Corruption Agency (AKSHI), Mirlinda Karçanaj, by changing the measure from "house arrest" to "compulsion to appear" and "ban on leaving the country".

Journalist Klodiana Lala, invited to the show "The Unexposed", described the decision as an unusual case, emphasizing that it is the first time that the Supreme Court has directly intervened in this way for a security measure.

Klodiana Lala: It is the decision we were waiting for. A few days ago, the united colleges unified the practice of assigning security measures. This should have been regulated a long time ago. but as long as high-ranking officials were not affected, it was not affected. The former director of the AKSHI appealed to the Supreme Court. And this is the first decision after the unification of the practice. We do not know that the decision was justified, but she was released from house arrest. This decision comes immediately after the unifying decision. We must bear in mind that these requests for replacement of security measures have been made by Meta, Berisha, Ilir Beqaj, Lefter Koka, Erion Veliaj, this is the first case where the security measure has been mitigated. For the first time, we have a standard decision. Karçanaj is also accused as part of a structured criminal group. So he probably has the most serious charge. How is it possible that the Supreme Court previously rejected recourse and as soon as it made this decision it changed, I see it as a way to pave the way for amnesty. Mr. Meta has such a request in the process. This AKSHI case is probably the most serious affair that has ever happened and the high court goes and releases her. The court must unequivocally justify how it relaxed the security measure for this lady. This decision of the High Court was not made for the plight of Albanian citizens who have been arrested and imprisoned. There was also such a measure for those who had built a fence without a permit. But when it comes to high officials, the high court turns a blind eye. It paved the way for their release. It sets a dangerous precedent.

Xhevahir Zhabina: It is a dangerous precedent. Tomorrow, Ergys Agas or others will have their rights. In this perspective, I see it as a very dangerous decision. Not to mention that Ms. Karçanaj has a serious charge as part of a structured criminal group. The same standard must be maintained, whether Meta or Veliaj requests a change of measure.
