Death toll rises, 9 dead in shooting at school in Turkey

Nine people were killed and many more were injured in a gun attack at a high school in Turkey's Kahramanmaras province on Wednesday afternoon. The attacker, 14-year-old Isa Aras Mersinli, who was also a student at the school, took his own life. The boy's father, Ugur Mersinli, a former police officer, has been arrested.
Turkey's interior minister said the school was operating on a double shift and that the attack occurred as students were leaving the morning shift. He said the 14-year-old student entered two classrooms carrying a gun he had brought from home and opened fire indiscriminately.
According to him, nine people were killed in the shooting, including eight students and a teacher, while 13 people were injured. Of the injured, six have been hospitalized in intensive care units, with three in critical condition.
The minister expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, noting that the competent authorities were mobilized immediately after being informed of the incident. As he said, the ministers of the Interior, Education, Health and Justice went to the scene, while the President of Turkey was constantly informed about the developments.
