Hopes rise as US and Iran move towards agreement to end war
The US and Iran have made progress in recent talks, moving closer to a framework agreement to end the war, according to US officials, Axios reports.
The negotiations, conducted with the mediation of Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey, aim to overcome remaining disputes before the ceasefire expires on April 21.
Official sources stress that, despite the progress, an agreement is not guaranteed due to the major differences between the parties. A Pakistani delegation, led by army chief Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran to continue diplomatic efforts.
Behind the scenes, President Donald Trump's negotiating team - which includes Vice President JD Vance, envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner - has continued intensive communications with the Iranian side and the mediators, exchanging proposals and draft agreements.
American officials are optimistic, emphasizing that there is a willingness for agreement from some segments of the Iranian government, but the challenge remains reaching a full consensus in Tehran.
A new round of direct talks is expected to take place in the coming days, although there is no set date yet.
If a framework agreement is reached, it is expected to be followed by an extension of the ceasefire to negotiate the details of a full agreement, as the technical and political issues are considered too complex to be resolved in a few days.
Meanwhile, pressure on Iran has increased significantly.
According to American officials, the naval blockade imposed by the US has significantly reduced oil exports, the main source of income for the Iranian economy.
Experts warn that a complete ban on exports could have severe and long-term consequences for the country's energy industry.
The Iranian economy was already under pressure from sanctions, while the war and US and Israeli airstrikes have further worsened the situation, hitting key sectors such as the steel and petrochemical industries.
Despite positive developments in the negotiations, it remains to be seen whether the parties will reach a final agreement before the ceasefire expires.
