Red alert for flooding in Spain! Roads under water, schools closed and transport in chaos

Spain is on high alert due to a new wave of strong storms expected to hit the country, after a weekend marked by major flooding, property damage and the loss of a woman's life in Catalonia.
Authorities have issued a red alert for Mallorca and Valencia, while the army has been mobilized in the Balearic Islands to help emergency services cope with the situation. The Spanish meteorological agency AEMET has described the expected phenomena as "extremely dangerous", warning of heavy rainfall in areas already affected by the bad weather.
The concern is particularly great in Valencia, which in 2024 was hit by devastating floods with many victims, as well as in Mallorca, the largest island of the Balearic archipelago.
The toll of the bad weather has been compounded by the death of a woman, who was swept away by the current of a stream swollen by torrential rains in the Cabrera de Mar area, about 25 kilometers northeast of Barcelona.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, October 17, and her body was found at sea on Sunday, October 18. The news was confirmed by the Catalan fire service, following searches to find her.
Meanwhile, authorities in Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia and the Balearic Islands have recorded hundreds of incidents related to the bad weather. Flooding has affected homes, blocked roads and caused trees to fall, as well as considerable material damage.
Due to the risk of continued rainfall, the regional government of the Balearic Islands has decided to close schools in Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
In Valencia, rail services have been suspended until further notice, while authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise increased caution.
Warning messages have been sent to the mobile phones of residents of Valencia, Ibiza and Formentera, with instructions to limit movements in at-risk areas.
The situation is particularly difficult in Ibiza, where torrential rains have flooded roads and left many vehicles under water and mud.
The main road leading to the airport has been closed, while bad weather has caused significant problems in air transport.
According to the state airport operator, Aena, at least five flights have been cancelled and 16 others have been diverted to other airports, while other cancellations have also been reported.
To cope with the situation, the Spanish army has sent troops to Ibiza and Mallorca, in support of local emergency teams.
Flooding has also caused problems in southern Spain. Emergency services in Almeria, in the Andalusia region, report that they have carried out 37 rescue operations in 48 hours.
Another dangerous incident occurred on Saturday evening near Malaga, where ten people were trapped inside a flooded tunnel. Firefighters responded to the scene and managed to rescue everyone.
Spanish authorities remain on high alert, while warnings of new storms raise fears of more flooding, property damage and transport disruptions in some parts of the country.
