Putin's ally wins with 99.85% of the vote, Ramzan Kadyrov re-elected in Chechnya

Ramzan Kadyrov has been re-elected for a fifth term as leader of Chechnya, after receiving 99.85% of the vote in elections held in the southern Russian region.

The result was announced by the Russian Election Commission and comes in the context of elections held in a tightly controlled political climate.

Kadyrov is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest allies and has led Chechnya since 2007. He has repeatedly stated his support for Putin and Russia's war in Ukraine.

This year's result is even higher than that of the 2021 elections, when Kadyrov received 99.73% of the vote.

During the campaign, candidates who oppose the war in Ukraine have faced obstacles to running, while parties that have secured seats in previous elections have backed United Russia, Putin's party.

Kadyrov took over Chechnya after the assassination of his father, Akhmat Kadyrov, in 2004. Under his leadership, the region has maintained a close relationship with the Kremlin.

International human rights organizations have accused Kadyrov's government of human rights violations for years, charges he has denied.
