We are trapped by a group of politicians, both government leaders and opposition leaders, who, along with the destruction they are causing to the country, are also destroying themselves!
The political outcome will be very bad for them. The problems with them started with the way they took power. The way they take it directly affects the way they exercise it. In principle, power is obtained either by inheritance, or by skill and intelligence, or by coup d'état or by violence.
Skill and intelligence are about free elections, using talent and ability to win elections, says Elliot Cohen. While the third way is about any kind of violence, from collaboration with crime, corruption to direct physical violence. All of these have mixed violence, corruption and collaboration with skills and elections from the beginning.
Always, throughout history, all politicians who use violence, corruption, and other unfair means to seize power face consequences they cannot foresee. The way a politician, a president, or a prime minister holds power precedes the way he will leave it.
The ways to leave it are voluntary departure, (The case of George Washington, Cincinnati, Adenauer, Suarez, etc.), departure from the normal loss of elections and the decline of support, and departure from "stupidity", as Cohen calls it. Stupidity has to do with committing unusual actions up to any form of violence, buying, selling, threatening, crime in order not to leave. The cases are endless.
These types of politicians forget, they don't want to accept that any power, no matter how strong, is temporary, fragile and contingent (it depends on circumstances). Whatever happens, you will leave power. Because they don't accept or don't understand this, they behave in a terrible way, cling to power, commit all kinds of injustice and choose "stupidity" as a way out.
Cohen illustrates this with the case of Cardinal Wolsey, (described by Shakespeare in Henry VIII), who is the secretary of the treasury, the most powerful man to King Henry in England. Wolsey is very powerful, he does every trick and intrigue, he commits every crime and he doesn't even think about the possibility of his departure or his fall. But he falls when he least expects it. He then sees that the only thing left for him is to ask for mercy, nothing else. This is exactly what Wolsey says to Henry VIII.
This is the state of man: Today he puts forth the green leaves of hopes, tomorrow he blooms, and is densely covered with his blooming honors; on the third day a frost comes, a deadly frost,
and, when he thinks, the poor calm man, with the full conviction that his greatness is ripening, the frost breaks its root, and then it falls, just as I am falling.
This is happening to them, it will surely happen to these kinds of political leaders that we have. Unlike Shakespeare's Thomas Wolsey, they don't think they have only to hope for mercy. They don't think of power as fragile and unstable, they think they can defend it with everything, doing every injustice, without falling. They think they won't fall. Poor people. It's not like that. But the country took their breath away!
