55-year-old man kills two people with a gun, Texas carries out first death

A Texas man sentenced to death for the murder of his ex-girlfriend and her new partner has been executed, becoming the first person to be executed in the United States this year.

Charles Victor Thompson, 55, was pronounced dead after being administered a lethal injection at Huntsville State Prison. He was convicted of the April 1998 shooting deaths of Glenda Dennise Hayslip, 39, and Darren Keith Cain, 30, in the Houston suburbs.

According to the prosecution, Thompson had been in a romantic relationship with Hayslip for about a year, but the relationship ended due to his increasingly possessive, jealous and abusive behavior. At the time of the incident, Hayslip had begun a new relationship with Cain.

Court documents show that Thompson went to Hayslip's apartment, where he got into an argument with Cain. After being called by police, he was ordered to leave the apartment complex, but returned about three hours later and shot both victims. Cain died at the scene, while Hayslip died a week later in hospital from his injuries.

"The families of the victims have waited for more than 25 years for justice to be served," prosecutors from the Harris County District Attorney's Office said.

About an hour before the execution, the United States Supreme Court rejected Thompson's final appeal without explanation, paving the way for the death penalty to be carried out.
