This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in his government statement to the Bundestag, who said that the world is increasingly characterized by the politics of great powers.
According to Merz, Europe must show more strength and awareness in power politics if it wants to preserve its values and order.
He said that Europeans can only realize their interests if they learn to speak the "language of power politics" themselves.
The German Chancellor underlined that Europe is not only an economic power, but also a normative alternative to imperialism and autocracy.
In this context, he highlighted three areas where the EU must prove itself: strengthening security and reducing dependence on technology and defense, increasing economic competitiveness, and presenting Europe as a united bloc.
Merz cited as a positive example the joint European response to US President Donald Trump's threats of tariffs and claims over Greenland, saying Europe showed "self-respect".
He underlined that this new awareness should be used in the future, including at the special EU summit in February, where increasing the competitiveness of the European Union will be discussed.
