Serbia returns mandatory military service, Vučić: It will come into effect

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that compulsory military service in the country will be restored and is expected to come into effect in December of this year or in March 2027.

According to Vučić, the final decision will be made within the next one or two months and will then be sent to the Serbian Parliament for approval.

"We will make this decision very soon, we will take it to Parliament and we will start registering recruits," Vučić said after a meeting with the leaders of the Serbian Armed Forces on the analysis of military capabilities for 2025.

The military service will last 75 days. The Serbian president stressed that the army has enough basic equipment, but some structures are still not fully ready.

"We need to prepare facilities, recruitment centers and medical clinics. We want young people to perform their service in the best possible conditions and gain responsibility, discipline and a sense of patriotism," Vučić said.

The return of compulsory military service must be approved by the Serbian Parliament. The Serbian government has been warning about the return of this service for years, while the initiative was concreted in January 2024, when the Army General Staff proposed this measure to the president.

In September 2024, Vučić signed the agreement to restore compulsory military service.

Since January 1, 2011, military service in Serbia has been voluntary. Meanwhile, neighboring Croatia also voted to restore compulsory military service in October 2025.
