Tragic tram accident in Portugal: 16 dead and 22 injured, most of them tourists

Portuguese authorities have confirmed the nationalities of the 16 victims who lost their lives in the tragic tram accident that occurred near São Pedro de Alcántara, in Lisbon.
According to official data, the victims are:
• 5 Portuguese,
• 3 British,
• 2 South Koreans,
• 2 Canadians,
• 1 Swiss,
• 1 Ukrainian,
• 1 American,
• and 1 French.

Meanwhile, 22 other people were injured, most of them foreign tourists from 10 different countries.

According to the Bureau of Air and Rail Accident Prevention and Investigation (GPIAAF), the collection of data from the scene was completed by Thursday. Initially, witnesses reported that the braking system may have failed, but sources from the authorities suggest that this may not be accurate.

The tram crashed into a building after derailing while descending towards Restauradores, causing the fatal crash.

The investigation is still in its preliminary stages, but the possibility that the accident was caused by a lack of maintenance is being ruled out. Authorities are looking into other possible causes, including structural damage.
