Pakistan has deployed 8,000 troops, a squadron of fighter jets and an air defense system to Saudi Arabia under a mutual defense pact, intensifying military cooperation with Riyadh, even as Islamabad is simultaneously serving as the main mediator in the war with Iran, writes A2CNN.

The deployment, the full extent of which is being reported for the first time, was confirmed by three security officials and two government sources. They said it was a sizeable, combat-ready force intended to support the Saudi military in the event the kingdom faces further attacks.

According to sources, Pakistan has sent about 16 aircraft, mostly JF-17 fighter jets produced jointly with China, which arrived in Saudi Arabia in early April. Two of the security officials also said that Pakistan has also sent two drone squadrons.

The five sources said the deployment includes about 8,000 troops, with a commitment to send more if needed, as well as a Chinese HQ-9 air defense system. The equipment is operated by Pakistani personnel and funded by Saudi Arabia, they said.
