Authorities issue tsunami alert as 7.6 magnitude earthquake hits Caribbean

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake has struck the Caribbean Sea south of the Cayman Islands.

The earthquake struck 129 miles southwest of Georgetown, Cayman Islands, at 6:23 p.m. ET on Saturday, according to the USGS report.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center (NWTC) initially said there was a tsunami threat for Puerto Rico. Residents in these areas were advised to stay out of the water, away from beaches and harbors, marinas and fjords, and not to go ashore to watch for a tsunami.

The center later canceled the warning for Puerto Rico, but said it still had advisories for Cuba, where tsunami waves of up to 1 to 3 meters above sea level could occur, as well as for Honduras and the Cayman Islands, where waves of up to 30 centimeters to 1 meter above sea level could occur.

The waves are expected to occur between 8:00 and 10:30 in the evening.
