Kosovo Assembly meets today in an extraordinary session to elect the president

The Assembly of Kosovo has called an extraordinary plenary session, which will take place today at 5:00 PM in the main hall of the institution. There is only one item on the agenda: the discussion on the election of the President of the Republic of Kosovo.

This session comes at a key moment for the political scene, as the constitutional deadline for electing the head of state is drawing to a close. Deputies of the tenth legislature have until April 28 to elect the president; otherwise, the country risks automatically going to new elections, which must be organized within 45 days, according to the interpretation of the Constitutional Court.

Over the weekend, the ruling party, the Vetevendosje Movement, called on the two opposition parties – the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo – to each nominate three candidates for president, seeking unifying and non-partisan figures.

However, this initiative has not found full support. PDK has rejected the offer, while its leader, Bedri Hamza, has described it as frivolous. On the other hand, LDK has left open the possibility of nominating Vjosa Osmani, but only if 66 votes are secured from the Vetëvendosje Movement.

According to the procedures, the president is elected with two-thirds of the votes in the first two rounds, while in the third round 61 votes are sufficient. However, for the validity of the session, the presence of at least 80 deputies in the hall is necessary.
