EU urges Germany to gradually lift border controls within Schengen area

The European Commission today called on Germany and other European Union countries to gradually lift border controls imposed within the Schengen area.
Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia and Sweden have imposed temporary border controls in recent years, despite being part of the Schengen area, which guarantees visa-free movement and regular border controls between member countries.
The European Commission stressed that these temporary measures are in line with EU law in certain circumstances, including real and legitimate concerns related to security threats and the migration situation.
Border controls, at all of Germany's land borders, have been in place since September 2024.
They have been extended three times since then, most recently until mid-September 2026.
"Illegal border crossings have fallen by 40% in 2026," said EU Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner.
He added that the European Union is implementing the most modern border management systems in the world, which creates the opportunity for national governments to work towards the gradual lifting of internal border controls.
According to the Commission, more effective alternatives to internal border controls already exist, such as non-systematic police checks, mobile biometric identification and vehicle tracking technologies.
However, the European Commission did not set a concrete deadline for the lifting of these controls, recalling that, in principle, the maximum duration of internal border controls should not exceed two years.
