EU adopts new sanctions on Iran: Asset freeze and travel bans

The European Union has approved new sanctions against Iran in response to Tehran's continued crackdown on protests and its support for Russia in the war against Ukraine.

The European Commission welcomed the EU Council's decision to impose new restrictive measures, stressing that the situation in Iran is being closely monitored and that the EU is ready to take further measures if necessary.

According to the decision, sanctions will be imposed on 15 individuals and 6 other entities. The measures include:

ban on travel to European Union countries,

prohibition of providing funds or economic resources to sanctioned persons and entities.

The EU Council has also extended the ban on the export and supply to Iran of technologies and components used for the production of drones and missiles. According to the EU, these devices are being sent from Iran to Russia and used for attacks against civilians and infrastructure in Ukraine.

In addition, sanctions have been imposed on 4 individuals and 6 other entities for their involvement in Iran's drone and missile program.

The measures will enter into force upon their publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that these sanctions send a clear message to the Iranian regime.

"The repression of protesters will not go unanswered. Those responsible for the violence will face international consequences. If the situation worsens, we are ready to do more," she said.

Financial Services Commissioner Maria Luís Albuquerque also said that these measures clearly demonstrate the EU's condemnation of Iran's violent response to peaceful protests.
