Antonio Guterres warns: UN on the brink of financial collapse

The UN chief has said the organization is at risk of an “ imminent financial collapse ,” citing unpaid fees and a budget rule that forces the global body to return unspent funds. Reuters reports.
“The crisis is deepening, threatening program implementation and risking financial collapse. The situation will worsen further in the near future,” wrote United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a letter dated January 28 to ambassadors.
The UN is facing a severe liquidity crisis after its largest contributor, the United States, has cut voluntary funding to the organization's agencies and refused to make mandatory payments for the regular and peacekeeping budgets.
In the letter, Guterres said: “ The decisions not to honor assessed contributions that fund a significant portion of the approved regular budget have already been formally announced.”
It was not immediately clear which country or countries he was referring to, and a UN spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
"Either all Member States respect their obligations to pay in full and on time, or Member States must fundamentally revise our financial rules to prevent an imminent financial collapse," he said, warning that funds could run out by July.
