Next talks between US and Iran, Italy announces it will welcome the meeting in

The next round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran will take place in Rome, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed.

This would be the second meeting between US and Iranian representatives within eight days.

"We received the request from the interested parties, from Oman which is playing the role of mediator, and we gave a positive response," Tajani was quoted as saying by the main Italian news agency, ANSA.

The comments by Italy's top diplomat suggest that although Italy will host the second round of talks on April 19, Oman will continue to serve as a mediator in these indirect talks.

"Rome is confirmed as a capital of peace and mediation," Tajani said. "We will continue to support all negotiations that can lead to a solution to the nuclear issue, but also to building peace."

In an unexpected development, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff met briefly after the end of talks in Oman, adding to optimism that relations between the two countries have taken a step forward.

Both sides described the discussions in Oman as "positive" and "constructive".

Separately, Iran confirmed on April 13 that Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will travel to Iran on April 16.

US President Donald Trump has said he wants to ensure that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful and wants a deal that would lead to the lifting of sanctions that have severely damaged its economy.

Trump has said that in the absence of a deal, there will be military attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, with possible involvement of Israel.

Estimates suggest that Iran could enrich enough uranium for a single bomb in less than a week and for several bombs within a month.

Meanwhile, the European Union on April 13 imposed sanctions on seven Iranian prison and judicial officials over Tehran's detention of citizens from the European bloc.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the sanctions were a response to Iran's "state-sponsored hostage-taking" of European citizens.

Regarding Iran's nuclear program, she said a quick solution is needed, as the October deadline for the reinstatement of UN sanctions on Tehran approaches.

Major European powers have warned Iran that they will activate the "immediate return mechanism" of the 2015 nuclear deal to restore UN sanctions if a new deal is not reached with the United States./ REL
