Ukraine-Russia talks, Trump with positive notes: The possibility of an agreement

United States President Donald Trump has given optimistic signals regarding the progress of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, stating that "very good talks" are taking place between the parties involved.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said: "Today there were very good talks, regarding Russia and Ukraine. Something can be done." The statements come at a time when the conflict, which began in February 2022 with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, continues with no clear solution on the horizon.

According to a Reuters report, US and Ukrainian negotiators have discussed an ambitious goal of reaching a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine by March. However, sources stress that this deadline remains flexible, due to serious disagreements over territorial issues.

Under the framework discussed, any potential deal is expected to be subject to a referendum in Ukraine, while citizens could be invited to participate in national elections at the same time. According to sources familiar with the process, the possibility of holding the elections and referendum in parallel in May is also being considered.

The second round of talks in Abu Dhabi has produced limited results, leading mainly to the exchange of 314 prisoners of war and a commitment to continue dialogue. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that the next trilateral meeting could take place in the United States.

The American negotiating team is led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law, who, according to sources, have encouraged the Ukrainian side to proceed with the electoral processes as quickly as possible.
