An assassination attempt has occurred in Moscow against a senior Russian official directly involved in the war against Ukraine, at a time when discussions are taking place about a future round of negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.
The attack was recorded on Saturday morning in the Russian capital and targeted General Vladimir Alekseyev, deputy commander of the GRU, the Russian military intelligence service.
According to Russian media, the assassination attempt took place while the general was in his apartment in a northern Moscow neighborhood. He was allegedly shot in the back by one or more gunshots. The general is believed to have survived, but his condition remains unknown. Investigators, quoted by local television stations, say the perpetrator “managed to escape.”
It is not yet clear whether the attack was carried out by a single person or an organized group. In Kiev, General Alekseyev is considered a “traitor.” Originally from the Vinnytsia region in central Ukraine, he later served with pro-Russian forces in the occupied territories.
In Moscow, it is reported that Alekseyev was one of the senior officials involved in gathering intelligence that led to the preparation of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He was also part of President Vladimir Putin's negotiations with Yevgeny Prigozhin's Wagner militia during the summer of 2023.
