Land attack imminent?/ Thousands of American soldiers land in the Middle East

Thousands of soldiers from  the U.S. Army's elite 82nd Airborne Division  have begun arriving in the Middle East as President Donald Trump weighs his next steps in the war against Iran, according to two U.S. officials on Monday.

The deployment of thousands of additional US troops to the Middle East is a move that would expand options for Americans, including deploying forces inside Iranian territory.

The paratroopers, based at  Fort Bragg , North Carolina, join thousands of sailors, Marines and special operations forces already deployed to the region. Over the weekend, about 2,500 Marines arrived in the Middle East.

The additional army troops include elements from the  elite 82nd Airborne Division headquarters  , some logistics and other support, as well as a combat brigade.

No decision has yet been made to send troops to Iran, but they will increase capacity for possible future operations in the region.

The soldiers could be used for several purposes in the war with Iran, including an attempt to capture Kharg Island, the center of 90% of Iran's oil exports.

Earlier this month, it was reported that there had been discussions within the Trump administration about an operation to take the island. Such a move would be very dangerous, as Iran could strike the island with missiles and drones.

The administration has previously discussed using ground forces inside Iran to extract highly enriched uranium, although this option would mean US troops staying deeper in Iran for longer periods, trying to extract material that is located deep underground.

Internal discussions within the Trump administration have also included the possibility of deploying U.S. troops inside Iran to ensure safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. While this task would be primarily carried out by air and naval forces, it could also mean deploying U.S. troops on the Iranian coast.

Trump said Monday that the United States was in talks with a " more reasonable regime " to end the war in Iran, but repeated his warning to Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz or risk American attacks on oil wells and power plants.

Any use of US ground troops, even for a limited mission, could pose major political risks for Trump, given the low American public support for the Iran campaign and his pre-election promises to avoid US involvement in new conflicts in the Middle East.

Since the start of operations on February 28, the US has carried out strikes on more than 11,000 targets. More than 300 US troops have been wounded and 13 service members have been killed as part of  Operation Epic Fury .
