Three of four US soldiers missing in Lithuania found dead

Three of four American soldiers who had been missing in Lithuania since last week were found dead on Monday, the US military said, after rescue teams managed to pull their armored vehicle from a swamp.

Lithuanian authorities received information on Tuesday that soldiers had gone missing during military exercises at a training center in the eastern city of Pabrade, near the border with Belarus.

Search and rescue teams worked with heavy equipment and excavators to remove sludge from the water-filled car, and then managed to pull them out of the pit.

"Three American soldiers were found dead today in Lithuania," the US Army Europe and Africa Command said in a statement.

It said that "search and rescue operations are continuing for the fourth soldier," while their identities have not been made public until their families are notified and their confirmation is received.

"Our hearts are heavy with grief. But our search does not end until everyone returns home," said US commanding general Christopher Norrie.

Hundreds of local and foreign workers, and search and rescue personnel, including engineers and divers, are involved in the search to find the fourth member of the armored vehicle, the M88 Hercules.

Lithuania, a NATO and EU member state, is host to over 1,000 US troops who are stationed on a rotational basis./ REL
