Massive crackdown on immigrants, Trump warns of harsh measures for 2026

US President Donald Trump is preparing significantly tougher measures against illegal immigration in 2026, backed by billions of dollars in new federal funding.
The plan includes expanding workplace raids, increasing the number of deportations and significantly strengthening border security agencies, despite growing opposition in some American cities.
The Trump administration has sent immigration agents to major US cities, where in some cases clashes with residents have been recorded during checks in neighborhoods with high immigrant populations.
Meanwhile, while high-profile raids have been conducted on various businesses this year, authorities have largely avoided farms, factories and other economically vital sectors known for employing undocumented immigrants.
Under the new spending package approved by Congress in July, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol will receive about $170 billion in additional funding through September 2029, a significant increase compared to their current annual budgets of about $19 billion.
Administration officials say the funds will be used to hire thousands of new agents, open new detention centers, and collaborate with private companies to track down undocumented immigrants.
The strict measures have also affected local political developments. In Miami, one of the cities most affected due to its large immigrant population, the first Democratic mayor in nearly 30 years was elected last week, an outcome that the mayor-elect described in part as a reaction to President Trump's policies.
In addition to strengthening law enforcement, the president has removed temporary legal status for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Haiti, Venezuela and Afghanistan, significantly expanding the number of people who can be deported.
Trump has promised to remove 1 million immigrants a year, a goal that, according to experts, is difficult to achieve.
So far, about 622,000 immigrants have been deported since he took office in January.
