Albanians, the fifth most seeking family reunification in Germany

Despite the significant tightening of immigration rules by the German federal government, more than 100,000 family reunification visas were issued this year, according to figures from the Federal Foreign Office, reported by Die Welt.
According to the report, 101,756 visas were issued by the end of November. The top five nationalities with the most applications were Turks (14,907 applications) and Syrians (13,148), followed by Indians (9,286), people from Kosovo (7,143) and Albanians (4,426).
In just over a third of the cases (37,227 applications), the visas were for children joining their parents. Conversely, around 3,500 visas were issued to allow parents to join their children. The most frequent visas, with 44,426 cases, were for spouses of foreigners living in Germany. A further 16,298 visas were issued to allow someone to join their spouse with a German passport.
Restrictions that came into effect in the summer
The right to family reunification generally applies only to the nuclear family, i.e. spouses and minor children. There are exceptions for certain difficult cases and, since the government reform in March 2024, for parents and in-laws of highly qualified professionals and workers who can independently provide for the livelihood of the entire family.
In July, the German government suspended family reunification for people with subsidiary protection status – as opposed to recognized refugees – for two years. Only in “difficult cases” will those granted subsidiary protection – a category that includes many people from Syria – be allowed to bring their spouses, minor children and, in the case of unaccompanied minors, their parents to Germany.
