Hormuz, open or closed? Trump's warning to Iran: Do not blackmail us

US President Donald Trump has broken his silence after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz again.

During an event at the White House, he stressed that Washington-Tehran negotiations are continuing, but showed a kind of anger with recent actions.

"We have very good conversations going on," Trump said before using irony. "They've gotten a little cute, like they've been for 47 years," was his statement, adding this warning: "They wanted to close the Gulf again, like they've done for many years. But they can't blackmail us."

The US president said he would have more information on the Strait of Hormuz by the end of the day. "We're talking to them, we're taking a strong stance. They've killed a lot of people," Trump concluded. Iran's Security Council says it is determined to control the Strait of Hormuz until the end of the war and calls the ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports a "violation of the ceasefire."

The main shipping channel was reopened by Iran on Friday, but has now been closed again. A tanker and a container ship have reported attacks off the coast of Oman, the UK's Merchant Marine Operations Centre says.
