Israel seizes Gaza flotilla near Crete and arrests 175 activists, Italy and France react: Respect international law!

A flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza has become the focus of international tensions, after pro-Palestinian activists reported that at least 22 ships were intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters near Crete.
Organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla have called the intervention “piracy” and “illegal kidnapping,” claiming the operation took place about 600 miles (960 kilometers) from Gaza and involved the use of force against civilians. They say several ships were damaged, communications were blocked, and participants were left stranded at sea in dangerous conditions.
On the other hand, the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that about 175 activists from over 20 ships have been detained and are being transported to Israel, describing the flotilla as a “publicity maneuver.” Israeli authorities stressed that the operation was carried out “peacefully” and in accordance with international law, with the aim of preventing a violation of the naval blockade of Gaza.
There have also been reactions from Europe. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the seizure and demanded the immediate release of the detained Italian citizens, while the European Union called for respect for international law.
Meanwhile, Greek authorities stated that the intervention took place outside Greek territorial waters and that there had been no prior coordination with Israel. According to them, several ships of the flotilla were left stranded at sea, while the people on board were taken away by Israeli forces.
The flotilla, launched two weeks ago by countries including Spain, France and Italy, aimed to defy the naval blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid. The event comes at a time when the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, with ongoing warnings of worsening living conditions for over 2 million residents.
