The leader of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, has confessed that before his arrest, and even before the opposition's mandates were burned in 2019, he had planned to retire from active politics. But the events that occurred made this impossible.
In an interview with the host of the show "Opinion" Blendi Fevziu, he said that if the burning of mandates and all the others that followed had not happened, he would be ambassador to Denmark today and would not be involved in Tirana politics at all.
Now, he says that leaving politics for him is the abandonment of Freedom, which is in his DNA, so he is more determined than ever to fight, not just for his own freedom, but for all honest and patriotic Albanians.
Blendi Fevziu : Being in isolation and under trial, have you given up active politics?
Ilir Meta: I had a plan to leave politics, when, although with dilemmas, I accepted to become President of the Republic, and if madness like the conspiracy to burn mandates and stupidity like the oaths to "Lana" by members of the Constitutional Court had not happened, perhaps today I would be as ambassador to my favorite country, Denmark. What happened made my return to active politics inevitable where things can be fundamentally changed.
From the first day of the President of the Republic's departure from office, they invented an "e-mail" from the US, claiming that I had been a collaborator with the State Security, a hoax that lasted for about a year, slandering non-public figures.
Then, after discovering some phones of people close to me, they tried to make me leave on my own "with grace". And since I not only did not leave on grace and did not escape out of fear of the letters that came every day, they fell short and kidnapped me on October 21, 2024. My departure from politics now, for me, is the very abandonment of Freedom, which is in my DNA. That is why I am more determined than ever to fight, not just for my own freedom, but for all honest and patriotic Albanians.
Blendi Fevziu : Do you have only one battle, the one with justice?
Ilir Meta : I have no battle with Justice, as I have never violated any law and I have never been aware that anyone else has violated the law. I have never made laws or decisions on demand like Edi Rama. I have never favored any company or businessman and I have never caused a penny of damage to the State Budget. Of course, this is all a political battle where Edi Rama is using the justice he seized with the support of the McGonigals and Mogherinis as a political weapon.
I have never evaded justice nor obstructed it. Today it has been universally proven that Edi Rama is the hostage-taker and obstructer of justice but also of European integration where he "shines" as a recidivist.
