European Council condemns arrest of Istanbul mayor: This action goes against the will of the people

The European Council said today it "strongly condemns" the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a key political opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as a measure that goes against the will of the people.

In a statement, the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe said that Imamoglu's arrest "bears all the signs of pressure on a political figure", adding that the Congress will raise the issue at a session next week.

We recall that Imamoglu was arrested today on suspicion of being the head of a criminal organization.
